Allergies are a common problem that many people face. Allergy symptoms may include a runny nose, sneezing and watery itchy eyes that recur during specific parts of the year, especially Spring and Fall. Food allergies (sensitivities), on the other hand, may result in diarrhea, nausea or abdominal pains. In other individuals, they may get easily sick or have eczema.

Most people with allergies look towards prescriptions medications and allergy shots for the treatment of allergies. Although these can help, they often only treat the symptoms and bring temporary relief of your discomfort. They do not usually get to the root of the problem.

From a Western medicine perspective, seasonal allergies are often caused by an imbalance in the immune system.  From a Chinese medical perspective, these are often due to an imbalance of the liver or lung systems (not to be confused with the actual organs themselves). Often, the body is not able to transition to the new season smoothly and the allergy symptoms result.

Chinese medicine, especially herbal medicine, can help to return balance to the liver and lung systems, whether it be due to an over-active or a weak immune system. Through accurate diagnosis, Chinese medicine can get the entire picture on how the body is imbalanced, with the allergies being the result. It will treat the root cause of the allergies and does not merely suppress the symptoms.

For food allergies or sensitivities, Chinese medicine views this as more of an issue in the spleen and stomach systems, which is related to digestion. Through boosting these systems, digestion can return to a more steady state. Note that, if there is indeed a food allergy, that food must be removed from the diet as well as your body can not handle the food itself.

Through Chinese medicine and nutritional changes, thousands of people have been able to gain control over their allergies and to get to the root of the problem. If you’d like more information, please feel free to contact me.
