Although acupuncture is the more commonly known and used modality in the West, herbal medicine is actually a huge component of Chinese medicine. Actually, here in Taiwan, you will find more doctors who focus on, and are skilled in, the herbal aspects of the medicine rather than the acupuncture aspects.
Acupuncture has caught on more in the West due to its very quick and effective results. If one has muscular-skeletal pain, an acupuncturist can, in most cases, very easily relieve the pain.
Herbal medicine, on the other hand, is more complex and its theory is very alien to westerners. In this way, its more difficult for westerners, especially in the medical field, to understand how it works. Thus, although its still widely used in the West, it is not as popular as acupuncture.
